New Websites: An Aesthetic Discourse and My Impractical Advice

For about a month now I have been working to get two websites up. One is a continuation of this blog, An Aesthetic Discourse. This new site will continue to feature my writing, although much more frequent. It will also feature more things that I’ve found on the internet that interest me or inspire me.

My Impractical Advice stems from what I was trying to do with Associated Content. I will use this site to gain better networking and also to have a single place for me to write articles that will help benefit people in different aspects of their lives.

I am putting in nearly 60 hours a week on these blogs right now. Once they get started I should only be putting in 20-30 a week, which is alright because I enjoy doing this.

Please visit the sites and tell me what you think.

Polaroid Instant Cameras are Back. Almost.

A little over a year ago, many of us learned that Polaroid Instant Cameras would no longer be sold.

But there is hope; Instant Film has not completely flatlined.

Yesterday, October 13th, 2009, it was announced that Polaroid would once again bring Instant Cameras back to market.

Polaroid will re-launch the legendary Polaroid One Step Camera and is therefore commissioning The Impossible Project to develop and produce a limited edition of Polaroid® branded Instant Films in the middle of 2010.

Production of analog Instant Film ceased in June 2008 when Polaroid changed their aims from a Film Production Company to a Consumer Electronics and Digital Imaging company. Impossible b.v. was then “founded with the concrete aim to re-invent and re-start production of analog INTEGRAL FILM for vintage Polaroid cameras,” according to The Impossible Project’s website. 7193038_coverI worked on this book for a year or so and made a huge effort to get it printed and sold. I even had an ISBN assigned to it. But now that I have realized that my time should be dedicated to other efforts, I am offering the book for free. All of the photos are mine, minus one. I designed the entire book and wrote all of the pieces. I hope you enjoy it, and make sure to tell me what you think.

Anonymous Smokers.

Sitting on a bench outside the Northfield Public Library, I take a drag, inhaling the tobacco into my lungs. The air has begun to cool and the sky is painted with various shades of gray. Leaves brush past in the wind, and I thank some being above for the beauty of this day and the opportunity I’ve been given to experience a gorgeous day like today so far from my home: San Antonio, Texas. But as I exhale, two women stride by, both tossing irritated glances in my direction. It wasn’t until this moment that I realized; I’m a social outcast. (more…)

It’s about.

Life is about the many mini friendships you make. Life is about learning and doing your best to live from a perspective other than your own, or at least with the understanding that your perspective is just as valid as another.

This was one of my faults: that I lived simply for myself and those I knew; the world outside of myself was no concern.

This next year I hope to experience another culture (even if college is a culture in itself). I hope to visit England and travel a bit. I feel as though America has left me extremely bias and misinformed.

This is a fault I will fix.

We Dig Our Own Graves

I have never been one to be particularly interested in the news. Today, though, I decided to scan some of the headlines. I was a little shocked to learn of the turn our world has taken. And it might not be much of a change from the usual, but I guess I was never aware how shallow we all really were.

I’ve always had a special place in my heart for Jon and Kate, parents of eight beautiful (and quite entertaining) children. Since 2007 I have been following the family. When I heard of the divorce and caught sight of the media coverage the family was getting, I was a little disgusted. Now I know that there are debates about whether Kate cheated also, and stories about the affair and possibly new girlfriend that Jon has. Regardless, the media went a little too far with this one. I don’t recall even Chris Brown having this much time on tabloid covers when he beat Rihanna. But maybe everyone understood, her music does get quite annoying. (more…)

Stuck in the 90’s.

I have an unnatural obsession with music from the 90’s. I feel as though I was born slightly late as I was unable to fully enjoy the music until today. So here are some videos to give these 90’s songs an update, and fill my fix.

A World Burden, Weakened by Community: A Photo Essay

This article was written/shot for my journalism class and was published on Pressville.

Together, through various efforts in the community, the Crop Walk on September 27th went off without a hitch.

Daisy Sue was saved from slaughter, a fate which she was condemed to because of a half-working udder. Yet today she lives, bringing entertainment to the Crop Walk.

Prayer of the Faithful

A beautiful Hispanic woman, she grips the stem of a royal blue carnation. Running her hands through her son’s hair, she looks down at him, he up at her. Raising the flower, her eyes begin to tear up. She kisses the petals and tosses it into the wind. The river rushing below quickly pulls it away.

The second kiss belonged to her little boy’s forehead.

Northfield, Minnesota annually participates in a “Crop Walk” sponsored by Church World Service, an organization that “provides sustainable self-help and development, disaster relief, and refugee assistance in some 80 countries,” according to its web site.

While the event has goals to help other nations with disaster relief and development, it also helps to fight hunger in Northfield. Due to the loss of jobs in the Twin Cities, “there are many families who are choosing between food [and] rent,” and many of those in need have college degrees, said Jean Wakely, a Crop Walk volunteer and community member.

The walk lead to Bridge Square where the walkers were greeted with cheers, folk music, bongo beats, apples, water, and prayer flowers. Community members were joyful, dancing, singing and catching up with one another.

A few feet away the Cannon River’s edge struck a more somber tone while prayers were prayed and flowers, a symbol of those prayers, were then tossed into the current below.

Now it would be a mistake for me to assume that the woman I witnessed tossing her prayer flower was praying for her own personal situation, or that of someone close to her. Regardless, it brought tears to her eyes. This emotion, a truly rare and beautiful sight, lead me to grab a flower of my own.

Now, I’m not as religious as I once was, nor do I feel prayer will save me or the people whom I pray for. But her faith impacted me — and she doesn’t even know.

Love is a leash.

The day of my departure to Carleton is near. Closer than I can probably imagine. It hasn’t quite struck me yet that this time next week I will be sitting in Minnesota, trying to enjoy the last trip I will have with my mom for quite a long time. I say “trying” because I will be far too focused on the idea of not seeing her for three months. It’s not the distance or the length of time I will maintain that distance from the ones I love, but the fact that nothing will be the same again.

I know we all face this at one time or another in our lives, but this is a milestone for me, and I must document it. (more…)
